چکیده

Many real world image analysis problems, such as face recognition and hand pose estimation, involve recognizing a large number of classes of objects or shapes. Large margin methods, such as AdaBoost and Support Vector Machines (SVMs), often provide competitive accuracy rates, but at the cost of evaluating a large number of binary classifiers, thus making it difficult to apply such methods when thousands or millions of classes need to be recognized. This thesis proposes a filter-and-refine framework, whereby, given a test pattern, a small number of candidate classes can be identified efficiently at the filter step, and computationally expensive large margin classifiers are used to evaluate these candidates at the refine step. Two different filtering methods are proposed, ClassMap and OVA-VS (One-vs.-All classification using Vector Search). ClassMap is an embedding-based method, works for both boosted classifiers and SVMs, and tends to map the patterns and their associated classes close to each other in a vector space. OVA-VS maps OVA classifiers and test patterns to vectors based on the weights and outputs of weak classifiers of the boosting scheme. At runtime, finding the strongestresponding OVA classifier becomes a classical vector search problem, where well-known methods can be used to gain efficiency. In our experiments, the proposed methods achieve significant speed-ups, in some cases up to two orders of magnitude, compared to exhaustive evaluation of all OVA classifiers. This was achieved in hand pose recognition and face recognition systems where the number of classes ranges from 535 to 48,600.

Efficient Approach Multiclass SVM For Vowels Recognition

In this paper we present and investigate the performance of a simple framework for multiclass problems of support vector machine (SVM), we present a new approach named EAMSVM (Efficient Approach Multiclass SVM), in order to achieve high classification efficiency for multiclass problems. The proposed paradigm builds a binary tree for multiclass SVM by genetic algorithms with the aim of obtaining...

Robust and efficient multiclass SVM models for phrase pattern recognition

Phrase pattern recognition (phrase chunking) refers to automatic approaches for identifying predefined phrase structures in a stream of text. Support vector machines (SVMs)-based methods had shown excellent performance in many sequential text pattern recognition tasks such as protein name finding, and noun phrase (NP)-chunking. Even though they yield very accurate results, they are not efficien...

Multiclass classifiers based on dimension reduction with generalized LDA

Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) has been widely used for dimension reduction of data sets with multiple classes. The LDA has been recently extended to various generalized LDA methods which are applicable regardless of the relative sizes between the data dimension and the number of data items. In this paper, we propose several multiclass classifiers based on generalized LDA algorithms, taking...

Orientation Invariant Features for Multiclass Object Recognition

We present a framework for object recognition based on simple scale and orientation invariant local features that when combined with a hierarchical multiclass boosting mechanism produce robust classifiers for a limited number of object classes in cluttered backgrounds. The system extracts the most relevant features from a set of training samples and builds a hierarchical structure of them. By f...

Image replica detection system utilizing R-trees and linear discriminant analysis

This manuscript introduces a novel system for content-based identification of image replicas. The proposed approach utilizes image resemblance for deciding whether a test image has been replicated from a certain original or not. We formulate replica detection as a classification problem and show that we can optimize efficiency on a per query basis by dynamically solving a reduced multiclass pro...
